Lemonade Stand

Little Timmy came running out of the apartment, later than what was agreed upon. Little Sammy glared at him as he looked both ways before coming across the street. Timmy immediately started to apologize as he came up to Sammy, but something flew out of his pocket. The look on Timmy’s face was that of fear, especially when a stranger picked it up for him. The stranger gave the kid a strange look as he handed it back, but in the end said nothing as he walked away.

The two boys gave a sigh of relief as they began to set up their lemonade stand in front of the apartment. They unloaded the two plastic crates that they had filled with gallons of water, sugar and lemons, onto the small table that they had carried over from Sammy’s house. They began to fill up the first pitcher of lemonade waiting for the impending rush of people that would be arriving at their stand.

The heat of the day began to peak and the waves of heat that were hitting the boys faces were making them sweat buckets. The sweltering heat enveloped their bodies. They poured their own cup of lemonade and took tiny sips trying not to spoil all of their profits.

The first customer snuck up on them. They did not see the large woman, dirty beyond all belief, sneak her way to the stand. It looked as if she had climbed through a chimney just to come and get a cold, refreshing glass of lemonade on this hot day.

She coughed more than she spoke, as if the heat was some sort of smoke that was snaking it’s way into her lungs. She eventually pulled out a quarter and handed it to Timmy and Sammy. She sat on the curb and stared at her apartment across the street as she took a large gulp of her lemonade.

Soon after their first customer there was a large group of people collecting around their lemonade stand. Sammy looked over at Timmy and they both smiled and high-fived each other.

The next customers were a pair of older men, one was a very skinny man wearing nothing, but his underwear and the other was wearing a suit. They put down two dollars on the table and ordered eight cups of lemonade. The boys were ecstatic; they had never had such a successful lemonade stand, especially in such a short amount of time.

The two men brought over the drinks that they had just ordered and gave it to the group of women and children that they were with. They were also having trouble breathing and they looked as if they had crawled through a mile of soot to reach this place.

From in the distance there was a burst of sound that was coming closer. The boys grew excited because they knew that they were going to have a big crowd.

Before the men in red had arrived the crowd of dirty people had bought more and more drinks, the hot day was definitely helping. The men in red began spraying water at the apartment across the road, where all of the dirty people lived at. Sammy walked over to one of the red men and asked if wanted some lemonade. The man was nice, but told us to back away, because it was unsafe.

After a few minutes passed the day seemed to have gotten cooler and the men in red had come over to visit the crowd of dirty people. The boys watched them give them water and blankets, but the people were no longer thirsty due to the lemonade stand and its tasty beverages.

Eventually the men in red came over to the stand and they took off their helmets. Their faces were red and covered in sweat, they did not need to tell Timmy and Sammy that they needed something cool and refreshing.

The men in red drank their drinks quickly and some even left tips, making Sammy and Timmy get even more excited with the amount of money they were making.

Soon people in white clothes came and took the men and women covered in dirt away, with some of the people in white buying lemonade as well.

When everyone had finally left Timmy and Sammy began to pack up the things and leave for Sammy’s house across town. As they were walking away something fell out of Timmy’s pocket, but neither of them had noticed that it had.

A stranger was walking behind them and wondered why a pack of matches had just fallen out of a ten year-old boy’s pocket.
